Steering wheel lights
On the X5, everything is lit when the lights are on, except the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel. I don't think this is normal. Are your guys steering wheel buttons lit? If yes, does anybody know if the steering wheel has bulbs inside the cover somewhere? If yes, are these the same p/n as the bulbs inside the cluster? How do you change them? (It's weird to have both bulbs going out in the same time I would think). This is how I purchased the car - no lit buttons on the steering wheel.

The steering wheel on my '03 is illuminated. I would expect that yours would be as well. The lights used in the wheel are LED's, mounted on circuit boards, and are therefore not designed to be replaced. If all of your LED's are out, you may have an issue with the circuit board inside the switches. "Search Illumination", as it's called, is driven by a separate circuit than that used to power the circuits in general.

Inside the housing of the steering wheel switch you have pictured here is a printed circuit board, which if memory serves me correctly, has a microprocessor, various support electronic components, switch contact pads for the push-buttons, and LED's for the "search illumination". If you do not have any illumination from the LED's behind each push-button, there MAY be a problem with that printed circuit board assembly. Keep in mind that the steering wheel switches from each side of the wheel connect together. I don't recall exactly which half actually has the microprocessor. You might also have a problem with the harness which comes from the steering column to the steering wheel switches, or in the connector at the end of that harness (at the end where it connects to the steering wheel switches.
Perhaps someone else has experience with this? I don't recall this being an issue when E53 was in production. just my $0.02 worth...

Thanks. Is there a way to test it? I don't have another set of buttons.

I've got a spare set (left & right) if you want them cheap to try (and replace for good if this is the case).
