4.6is shifting hesitations between 4th and 5th

Ok guys,

I recently got my X5 back from the shop after having to overhaul the cooling system due to the water pump failing. Recently in heavy traffic, the thing has this weird hesitation between 4th and 5th gear. It acts like it wants to downshift and revs gradually (no jerking just revs) then it finally shifts into 5th. I've only noticed it going roughly 40-50mph.

If I run it in tiptronic mode it doesn't do this and will hold the gear with no hesitation.

Any ideas?? I just hope and pray this doesn't mean my trans is on its way out.

Thanks in advance!

New development, now it seems to want to erratically shift when traveling at slow speeds. I'm forced to pop it into tiptronic mode just to get it to stop.

Just looking for some ideas before I drop it back off at the shop.

It may be something as simple as needing a software update or might go away with a fluid and filter change. Unfortunately, it sounds as though something is amiss internally. However, that doesn't mean it will need an entire overhaul. There may be codes in the OBC that will tell you more. I suggest you get it checked at a well recommended Independent transmission shop. BMW dealers don't repair transmission, only replace them.

Thanks for the tip. I'll just have to wait until after the holidays and find a decent indi shop. I know someone mentioned a good one in my last thread so I will have to check them out.

I experience too - mine is more between 20-30mph with foot steady/light on the gas. Feels like it wants to shift, but then resumes back. Like you, in Manual Mode, I get no issues doing the same thing. On the next service, I will get the software update to see if it resolves anything.

Yep, exactly what is happening to me.

Is there an official software update? What does the dealer typically charge for this?

Ill find out - Im going through a BMW Shop (not Dealership) that does strictly Bimmer stuff.

Along with the service, Ive mentioned this item to them and they didnt feel like its a transmission problem since its not slipping (at least from what I can tell at WOT)...

They did mention new shift profile available they could upload that has better shift points, etc etc.

I do know Im getting some other items done, so it will be hard to pin point what exactly is causing it. Part of my service will be Coil Packs and Plugs...pretty major service, so hopefully I get some sort of result from it. I have no codes stored in my computer, so thats a good sign so far.

It is a nuisance though. I just know how to avoid getting that stutter feeling.

Ya'll need to check for OBC codes to get a better insight as to what is going on.

Exactly! It's really annoying and I almost feel like I'm pulsing the pedal to keep it from stuttering. Please do let me know your results once you get it back. I've got 73k, so might be time for a decent tune up myself

bcredliner - No stored codes for me either.
