No electric car xpert, but even with a ~100 mile range, that should encompass 5 days of commuting, a side trip and a couple of close in errands.

That i3 is nice and interesting, via the review of it I put up, but it's pushing $50Gs for a 'commuter'. Of minor importance to many here, but makes me scratch my head, running cost-wise, over time.

Heated back seats...kids today are different and have slightly more demands and expectations. Being a kid in the 1950s provided me/us with a few less accoutrements I guess.

The other option that my wife put out there, which she will likely regret if I take her up on it. Is that she starts using my Mini, and I (with the 100 mile daily commute) get a new/newer high mpg car, like a 328d touring, or E90 335d? Then my car would become the weekend/road trip car. Makes sense to me. Love to get a BRZ, but she pre-emptively vetoed having two 4 seaters as our primary cars.

The E90 is nice but definitely not as comfortable as my wife's E53 for long trips, especially if you get an x-drive (mismatched struts from the factory). I would recommend you sell the X5 privately with the extra parts as a bonus if you get your asking price and putting the money towards a diesel Jetta for you and then eventually trading the Mini in for something with 3 rows of seating (not sure what age your kids are).

6 miles may not be a warm up route even for a small car with a tiny engine, you'll see. Run a VERY good synthetic oil to keep it clean.

For your X5, if it's very well cared for & you are a member of the BMW CCA - then look at advertising it this way, particularly if you sort out the typical suspension wear items.

Have a diesel Jetta (friend is currently borrowing it) that I was driving before I decided to get the Mini. Between the Jetta and another friend's Passat, I'm now opposed to owning any other VW's in the future.
I showed my wife the draft listing I made for the X5, and now she isn't sure she wants to sell it anymore after seeing all the features listed out in one place.

@Gregory891. You missed the part where I clarified its 1.5-3 miles one way, which would only warm up a scooter, maybe.

I've been pushing for an electric or plug-in hybrid ever since she took the new job. The 7 seater Tesla Model S would be the perfect car, other than the price. If only the Highlander Hybrid was available as a plug-in...

Sounds like you need to move closer to your work and farther away from her work/schools so your commutes average out more...
