Getting ready to DIY Vanos and timing chain guides...what else to do?

(DIY) Replaced water pumped/thermostat at 85,000miles in 2009; valley pan and all new cooling/heating hoses at 92K miles in late 2009.

X5 currently has 136K miles; no issues except for the Vanos and chain guides noises/symptoms.

Should I go ahead and replace the water pump/thermostat, valley pan, and the alternator while I have the lower timing chain cover opened?

How long can a water cooled alternator last? I hate to do this big job and have to go back to redo those mentioned above in the very near future.

Thanks in advance for the wise guidance.

Isambard is an unknown quantity at this point
Personally I think the W/P, thermostat, and valley pan gasket don't need to be replaced. Although I'd certainly have a look to see if there was ANY evidence of leaking on the valley pan. If there was the slightest weeping, then yes do the valley pan, otherwise leave alone. The waterpump isn't that involved, and the thermostat is even easier.

There will be two camps on the alternator. One will say change it out as its high mileage, as well as a 'while you're there' ethos. The other will say leave it alone if you haven't noticed any issues with it backed up with the rationale of it's not too bad a job if you have to do it when it does pack up..

As they say in all good game shows, 'MrFixIt, the choice is yours'

I'd do all of it because I'd hate to have to go back in. My alternator on my 03, went a month and change into ownership in August with 4xk on the X. I attribute the low mile failure to a lifetime in Phoenix.

I would think the water pump and hoses would still be ok with 40k or so on them. Obviously do a visual inspection when you get in there.

Cooling system components are 100k miles maintenance items. You have another 50k miles on them easily. I'd leave them alone.
Are you replacing the entire Vanos units or just the seals selling on Beisan System website? The seals that BMW used are known to be inferior and start to harden around 30k miles or so.

I am sure at 40k it is all good but how will you feel if at 60k you have to open it up again? When I built my 350Z motor I replaced everything (oil pump, chains, guides tensioners waterpump etc just because I was in there. (motor died anyway thanks sh!tty machine shop)

Check your tensioners and replace the pulleys

If you end up replacing the valley pan gasket, consider pro-active replacement of the cooling pipe (that will leak at some point).

Watch the video's, I enjoyed driving a friend's twin turbo X6 for two weeks but am glad to own an E53 with a less fussy M57 diesel....
