Where is this oil coming from..?

Hi All,

I'm sick and tired of seeing drips of oil on the garage floor, so I've decided to get stuck in and solve this at long last!

I have oil leaking at the bottom of the autobox/transfer case. Is there a common cause/remedy?

When was the last time you changed the OSV? There are a few hoses that carry oil back there. If they are deteriorated or maybe even no longer there, the oil may be coming from there. Just curious... Whats that pink stuff on the tranny case?

You sir, have the eyes of a hawk! The pink stuff is the coolant. I had a split hose a while back and there is still residue here and there I'm getting around to cleaning off as I find it.

If by OSV you mean Oil Separator, I changed it nigh on 3 years ago. I'm currently in the process of doing a massive service at the moment including the valley pan gasket, oil separator (hose too), CVV, manifold gaskets, valve cover gasket (bank 1 as I found oil in the rear 2 spark plugs) EGR valve and pipework, timing chain tensioner, serpentine belt and aircon belt, all associated hoses, O rings (particularly the injectors as they have gone solid hard), gaskets etc.

You might note that I have dropped the sump pan too as I had a very slight leak there too, so replacing gasket.

Could it be a simple case of it being the oil separator/pipe, or is there a seal that is prone to failure in the tranny/case area?

I'm hoping it's not a seal after all, but most likely the split hose from the crankcase breather pipe-the one that connects to the CVV. It pulled apart like it was liquorice.

It had obviously been running down the breather pipe as it was caked in oil..

@Isambard

I'd like to check this pipe but can't reference in terms of its position. Where about is it?

Btw doing the oil separator and hoses 'replace' soon (have ticking noise and mayo in oil filler cap). Did it about three years ago. Its the cold climate and short journeys I know...Where in the UK did you leave behind?

ssd, it's the tubing that runs from the top of the oil return pipe to the CVV. No. 12 in the pic.

If you're looking for it's location on the car, the pipe runs through the gap between the back of the block and the accumulator.

I disconnected it from the sump (banjo bolt-17mm A/F if I remember correctly), and 1 bolt (use a 1/4 drive 10mm socket) from the back of the block up by the accumulator. I had to climb on top of the engine to feel for the pipe and bolt. Without telling you how to suck eggs, before you remove connect a piece of string/cord/wire to the pipe (like when you run wires in your house) so as not to lose the 'run' of the pipe on the vehicle. That way it'll be easier when putting it all back.

If you're going to remove the oil return pipe make sure you replace the 2 copper 'crush' washers-No.16 on the pic.

I escaped from Sutton, Surrey/Greater London.. Are you from the UK?
