Intake hose oddity

Before anyone says search/not another one of these threads etc I searched.

Took the air cleaner assembly apart to do the tensioner and found this:


I had no codes and the car sounded fine

Which is more likely, I broke it taking it apart or it was already letting in unfiltered air?

New part ordered, not driving the X until it comes.

Additionally, WTF with having to shove two pieces of metal in there to get this out? I was very afraid I was going to break the air box.
