Replacing DVD player in trunk

This seems straightforward enough but I'm having no luck on google, ebaymotors or the forums. Everytime I search for a "dvd player" I'm getting the head unit or the rear entertainment system replacements. I originally thought that the DVD screen/monitor itself was junk, but now I'm nearly positive it's just the actual player located in the little side box in a rack in the trunk.

I recently purchased the 2002 3.0i manual which came with the factory BMW entertainment package, which includes the screen/monitor facing the rear passengers, 2 wireless headphones and the remote. I put a DVD in the player in the trunk, and the screen just bounces up and down uncontrollably. But when I switch source to Aux 2 and 3 (which I also have no idea why there are 3 sources when there's only the DVD player and an aux input or even the Nav input (no nav either...), the screen doesn't jump at all. Today when I went to go mess with it again the DVD player didn't even turn on.

All that to get to the question.... why the hell can't I find just the single DVD player that goes into the rack? Couldn't even find a part # on the face of the unit itself because it's so worn out. Ideas, links?

Correct me if I'm wrong but a thought the dvd player was mounted below the rear cup holder .You would not be able to change movies as your driving when mounted in the rear compartment

Strange. Does your car have navigation?

No navigation although the monitor does have an input setting called "Nav". The head unit is a simple radio/cd. The DVD player in the trunk looks like it's an Alpine. I've been searching for and think it might be http://vault.alpine-usa.com/products...M_DVA-5205.PDF. Which is exactly what mine says it is "DVD player/Video CD/CD Player". But that still does me no good since I can't even find a unit for sale, just user manuals.

R U sure it's a DVD player and not a CD player? How many discs can the cartridge hold?

Yep, says DVD player right on it. Only holds 1. Got it to start playing on the screen once but it was choppy as hell.

Not easy to figure out how an aftermarket unit is wired and how to get it to work unless it was a plug and play replacing the original equipment. I would pull it and go to an auto audio shop or even the audio guys at Best Buy and see if they have anything to replace what you have. Don't have to purchase but should give you a sense of direction for a fix. Sounds like it is old technology anyway.

What happens when you put a CD in it?

It is probably for the Nav. Get a Nav disc and see if a map pop up on the screen.
