Bad Temp Sender?

Ok, I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything. My 2001 X5 4.4 has a temp gage that goes directly into the red. Basically, start the car (when cold) and for about 1 second it reads correct and then pegs. Is there an easy way to confirm its the sender? Also, where is it located? Any help is appreciated. Im sure if I keep searching but would appreciate some quick help. Thanks in advance!!

Sound like the Coolant temp sensor is at fault here.

Another question. I just ordered that sensor. I see it goes in the LWR Rad hose. Is there a head temp sensor or is the gage completely driven by the one in the LWR rad hose? Thanks, Mark

Post some pictures if you can, please. Cuz this morning I experienced the same symptom. Scared the shit out of me.

Check the coolant level, perfectly normal. Restarted it, and issue is gone. Drove the 45 min trip w/o any issue. Weird!

Where did you order your sensor? I'm about to order it from Bavauto.com, but not sure if they can beat the price you got. Let me know. thanks a lot!

Put the part# in Furiousmethod.com - BMW Parts Price Comparison and decide for yourself, LeiZ
