I kept trying and after 6-7 tries it started to turn over but would not start, so I floored the accelerator and she finally caught and started. I had plumes of blue/white smoke billowing out the exhaust and filled our side yard with a huge cloud. I definitely have oil in the cylinders, as she's smoking like a bastard out the pipes. I left the truck in the garage all day today to thaw at about 50 degrees. I'm going to attempt another start tonight. I also have a big mess of oil on the passenger side of the engine compartment, so the oil got everywhere and was down 2 quarts as a result. Thanks for your feedback, I'm looking for a shop to fix her up again now that I've calmed down!
Sounds like one of the cylinder may have been hydro locked. Should do a compression check on all the cylinders. The cylinder with the low compression is probably the one that was hydro locked. Most likely the rod is bent.

UPDATE: So after contacting my two Indy's that I normally use for repairs, I decided to bite the bullet and bring her to the $tealer for repairs after the Indy's responses were "What is an oil separator and what does it do". Nice...

Price quote for the upgraded cold weather separator and dipstick tube replacement mentioned in SIB 11 08 03 at the $tealer was $870. With this cold weather again, it needs to be done, wish me luck the repair goes well.

Remember, if you're only replacing the oil separator and not installing the upgraded dipstick tube and hose drain, you're only doing 1/2 of the job and you'll freeze up again.

Oh, if anyone needs a copy of the SIB, let me know and I can post it in PDF format on this thread.

Is N62 engine also effected? If so, is there BMW service information bulletin for oil separator on N62 engine?

Not sure, the SIB I have only applies to the M54 engine.

Here you go. Let me emphasize, if you're only replacing the separator and not the redesigned dipstick tube, it is not going to work, you'll re-freeze. Install all of the parts in attached SIB and make sure you ask for the cold climate version for your vehicle. Enjoy the cold weather, our ride is fixed, day 1 in high temps of 16 degrees today, no problems so far!

What's so special about the new guide tube? It doesn't look much different on ECS...

I have not read this thread in hole, but the SIB you posted just shows a insulated hose.

There is another *kit* that has a heated hose.

Regardless, both of these are to help mitigate the problem.
It won't make the problem go away based on driving/vehicle usage...

It has a larger drain tube which prevents clogging in the colder winter months when you get the yellow/orange "cheese whiz" in the oil due to moisture. That "wiz" is what clogs things up and freezes and we all know the rest of the story. I'm on day 2 in subfreezing weather and we're good so far. Considering I got 12 years on the original separator, if I get 5 or so more years before the problem crops up, I'll be happy. After all, she's just my Winter vehicle and a garage queen during the Spring/Summer/Fall.
