How much time elapsed between when the engine was previously shut off and when you started it and it backfired?

It was only a few days. It was running fine before it happened. I just pulled the intake manifold off another '04 X5. I need to check the injectors before replacing it.

A backfire that cracks the intake manifold would require lots of fumes/fuel. Did the engine crank over for some time before it started and backfired?

It backfired within seconds of turning it over. Could a fuel injector get stuck open?

Before it started or just after the engine started running

Trying to get the details from my wife. She said it was running for 2-5 seconds before backfiring. It continued to run poorly, loud due to the hole in the exhaust, for 5 or so seconds when she turned it off.

With a backfire through the intake manifold you most likely have a crack or a hole in the manifold. This was a very common occurrence on a 911 with the CIS intake system. Only fix is to replace the manifold.

The intake manifold was split down the seam. I've already pulled one out of another X5. But I still need to find what caused the backfire. I also have to fix the hole in the exhaust that was caused by the backfire. The backfire blew the intake and exhaust at the same time.

Sure you didn't drop a valve?
