P light on shifter

My park light is always on when the X is parked. I noticed last week when I went into the X after it had sat all night.

Should it stay on for hours/days/weeks?

I don't lock it in my garage. I just locked it & I'll look in 20 minutes.

Thanks

If it stays lit your X is not going into "sleep mode". Look into X to see if it has gone out after 30 mins, do not use the key remote or open a door, this ends "sleep mode" and turns the light on.

I did not have the sleep mode term which is why my searches were for naught.

Searched sleep mode & BAM!

I even have the Fluke 83 they reference!

Looks like the rest of my day has been filled.

Thanks!

It was off after locking.

Guess it stays on if unlocked.

Even unlocked the X should "sleep mode". I check mine from time to time while garaged and unlocked, it always sleeps. With volt meter in cig lighter I see the volts jump from 12.6 to 12.9 when the shifter light dims out.

The shifter light goes out to signal the modules are sleeping.

I don't agree that the shifter light necessarily goes out to indicate sleep mode. It may do so on some vehicles, but it doesn't on others. The vehicle should go to sleep, it is just that the park light is not an indicator of sleep mode.

On my E53, the light was always on. Never had a flat battery in four years, including use down to -30C.

A BMW tech that was active here previously reported that the light does not indicate sleep mode, per BMW.
