Hello X Fans,
I recently bought a 2004 all wheel drive X5 with the 4.4L N62 engine. It definitely needs some TLC but then that's why they sold it to me. Anyway, most of the issue are cosmetic (like window and door handle type issues). I do have one engine issue that I am hoping to get some input on from you guys.
Here is the problem. I start the engine and it starts, but runs rough for like 15-30 seconds then something happens and I get a P0021 and P0024 code (codes are intake cam over advanced and exhaust cam over advanced) and then it starts running beautiful. I can drive it and it drives great and all is good, until I turn it off and it starts all over again. Doesn't matter if the engine is hot or not and it seems to happen every time I start it. Not getting any other codes. It seems like the timing is off and I have some misses till the codes come on and then it smooth's out. I am thinking it could be the Vanos solenoids but it seems unlikely that they both would have a problem at the same time. Definitely seems like I am not getting the oil to the Vanos to adjust timing at start up. Is there anything that could starve both intake and exhaust solenoids?
Any input would be appreciated.
