I bought 2 sensors on ebay for 35 bucks, plugged them in and they work just fine. Took me 15 minutes to do both.
Dealer is right about the facelift sensors on the corners being a a pain, you have to drop the bumper most likely, and be aware they are the corner shaped sensor on the facelift (front corners only). You need this, if you're handy you can get it done in an hour including dropping the bumper. New PDC Parking Sensor BMW E39 E53 E85 E86 R50 R52 R53 525i 530i 540i M5 x5 Z4 | eBay

what i did was; put the car in reverse and pull the Ebrakes so it doesn't move or just have someone press on the brakes while it is in reverse, then listen to each sensor and if you hear a clicking / ticking sound, it's good. If not, that sensor has a problem.

Yeah you could just hit the button to activate the system. Replacing the corner sensor is def DIY'able. I think there are a total of 10 bolts between 10 and 8 mm. Use a plastic putty knife to unclip the bumper at the fenders, pull it out then lift the cover off the front. Don't pull out too far because the leads on the sensors isnt very much and if you have Cold Weather Package, the headlamp washer hose is also cut very short. It's a pressure fitting with a retaining clip. Remove the clip and pull the coupling apart. If your washer rez is full, be sure to have a container to catch the washer fluid so you can replace it later.
Pop the sensor out, put the new one back in and smack it all back in. Your first time doing it will take about 1.5 hours... When you need to do it again, 15 mins.
