Preventative Maint - Fuel Pump
I've seen more than 1 or 2 threads on this... Not sure if this is something to consider... |

It's not a bad idea. I haven't done it myself. Depending on the mileage of your car, it might be something to consider. These parts do have a tendency to go out every so often, and when they do, they usually require a tow to get the car either to a shop or to your garage for work.

how many miles on your X? its not a bad idea, I'd also change fuel filter at same time too if doing it.

well thats good. I'd say if you run good 93 octane gas, run a bottle or two of Techron fuel system cleaner a year through there, and already did the filter and have no fuel delivery issues, you prob still have some life in there.
Key is to not run the X down to single digits on the OBC, you don't want to burn up the fuel pump sucking fumes from the pickup on both sides.

Good idea to change the fuel pump. I changed the fuel filter at 100K miles and I should have changed the pump as well but I didn't
, what a pain it was to get to the filter. However, I hacked the filter in half and what a discusting mess it was, I was surprised that any fuel was flowing through it.

Filter IMO is easier than the pump.
Sender Pump is pretty straightforward I suppose.....just more messy (contain any drips when removing and don't get any on the interior |

I blew high pressure air thru the outlet side of my old filter, tar black schmeg came out the inlet side!

I would not change the fuel pump as preventative maintenance. There is not a cluster of failure points that you can use to determine the expected life. PMs are by nature designed to reduce cost, but if you don't know the likely failure point you are more likely to increase costs.
Yes, they can fail at higher mileage. They can also fail when new. Infant mortality can be a greater risk than the next week of operation, especially when you consider that you are doing work that may disturb something. You are just trading off one risk for another. Maintenance Programs have moved along a great deal from the old ideas of fixed change intervals, and replacing components to avoid failures, in the past twenty years. The attached article is about twenty years old, and illustrates some of the learnings. Worth reading. I have posted it before, but will have to go back and find the old link. edit: found it. It was in 2010, in a discussion about transmission maintenance. Let's not go there right now. Same paper, in any case. Do change the fuel filter. Jeff
