Navigation !

Hey guys not gonna dig out any more dirt onto this subject but I'd like to know my options here.
Aftermarket or oem?
My car came without navigation and that's one thing that bothers me to no end .
Dumb question but bear with me: Is it possible to install the screen only and have all the radio and obc controls work but not install the navigation unit ?(since I'm using my phone most of the time anyway).
Pretty much what I'm asking is: can I replace the business radio and mid with the screen and get all the functions to work except navigation?

Why do you need the screen not for navigation purpose? I'm not sure if the screen even work without the nav control unit. You might have to look into having a Dynavin and relocate your MID to the glove box.
I do have Navigation in both of my bimmers but I used the iPhone instead. Much easier and up-to-date. I do have 2014 Nav disc, BTW.

Just an FYI...you'll also need the radio unit which is mounted below the cargo floor right next to the battery when you have the Nav set-up.

Just a thought in case the radio unit wasn't being offered in knucklebuster's nav system that's for sale (without the harness, too).

The clock & OBC functions are sent to the Nav screen or MID from the IKE, the audio and nav info comes from the obvious components either in the rear or indash units, and the radio comes from the in-dash cass or CD unit (MID set-up) or from the rear mounted radio (Nav set-up).

Don't feel bad about not having Nav in your X5...at this point, it's really outdated and anything on your phone is probably much better anyways. Plus, other than navigation, the MID gives you everything else. Another downside of the Nav unit is...it's a dedicated cassette tape player only...at least with the MID, you can get the CD53 and play single CDs inside the vehicle (if you have the early C53 (cassette player)...instead of only having the CD changer in the rear.

IIRC the video is generated by the nav computer and is required before the screen will populate anything (am. fm, cd, cass.) Overseas they had a "video tuner" for cars that didn't have the nav computer but had the screen. The navigation forum probably would be best to answer this question however.

Thanks for all the responses !
I think I got my answer.
Quicksilver you're right, I'm never gonna use the outdated navigation and the iPhone is so much easier to use..at this point I guess only the Dynavin will actually be worth it.

TMV-I'm pretty much wanting a screen for aesthetic reasons nothing else.

You would have to tear the interior out of your X just to install the wiring harness from the back to the front, BMW didn't pre-wire non-nav cars. And like others said it's a really old outdated system, I installed a Hualingan over the Dynavin, I think it looks better, I've had no problems whatsoever with it, I love it. You can find several threads about each system along with info on the Hualingan vs Dynavin debate. Also, if you have a DSP sound system you'll have to remove it or do the DSP work around for the Hualingan or Dynavin to work, they are not DSP compatible.
