Oil filter housing gasket, do I need to drain the oil?

From the couple DIYs I've read I didn't see anything that said to drain the oil, so just wondering if I need to drain it or not.

Nope. The oil drains back into the oil pan after you shut down. Just make sure the engine is cool before you start work. I literally just changed mine two days ago, and spilled MAYBE an ounce at most.

You might want to loosen the oil filter cap to release the oil in the housing back down into the block, before starting the work.

Good point. I didn't need to on mine, but it couldn't hurt.

Make sure you put a big rag under the housing before taking the bolts out. It'll save you a ton of clean up time after you're done. Even with it draining back to the pan, a decent amount of oil remains in the filter housing.

@ Brandon, I had almost none, like it was just a little that was caught inside the various pockets and cavities inside the housing itself, rather than around the filter.

You have an I6 engine and Brandon002 has a V8 engine. Two completely different engines and completely different as to how the oil filter is located on the engine.
