Engine Oil level...

Hello folks

Do you think what I've done is correct during the oil change?

We have refilled the engine with exactly 8 liters of oil but the dip stick indicates it's just on the low marker. That is after running the engine for a while and waiting for the oil to settle. I told the mechanic not to put more oil as the spec only states 8 liters...

What do you think could have gone wrong?

Thanks!

I always put 8.5 qts in / oil change and then watch it get sucked up into the CCV system at a rate of approx 1500-2000 miles / qt.

I am going to be installing a catch can once the weather warms up to get some very accurate figures ( and prevent the oil from being burnt )

Have you replaced the CCV's on your 4.8? If so they should be the newest design and you shouldn't be burning oil from that, and they are dirt cheap and easy to replace compared to the complicated M54 system.

If you have replaced them and are still burning oil its your valve stem seals.

ccv's updated and the valve stems are not going to cause the oil to be passed into the intake upon idle... it's a design flaw that bmw fixed in 2007 with the "updated" valve cover and ccv valve built into the hose.

I refuse to give BMW $500 in parts to fix something that they clearly new was not correct, but just wanted to make all kinds of $$$ off the consumer.

I am going the "catch can route" to fix this issue...

I'm just going by what I've read on here as a few 4.8/N62 owners reported valve stem seals causing the smoking at idle which I would think is indicative of burning oil.

Did not know that BMW updated the design of the valve cover in 07 for the N62, its $500???? That's ridiculous! However if it fixes the problem I would probably just do it if I owned a 4.8.

Looking forward to the catch can...

Are you sure LITERS were used to fill the vehicle, and not QUARTS. If you used quarts...you need to use 8.5 quarts.

Seeing that he is posting from UAE it would be safe to assume they are on the Metric standards and not the English standards.

But your info is correct as usual.

...thanks...I missed noticing the UAE location.

Also, make sure the dip stick is inserted fully...and if still low, add 1/2 liter....or enough oil to bring the level up so that it is between the low & high mark on the dip stick.

This might sound dumb - but I don't feel like I can ever get an accurate reading off my dipstick. One side of the stick always shows a higher level than the other-side. It's inconsistent with itself.

Vehicles with oil dipsticks are very helpful
Compared to the newer engine (with just an oil level sensor)

As long as no msg check engine oil level, I think you are fine with 8L ( it does not hurt to re-check in a week) and carry 1-2 bottles engine oil with you

Unless you want to drain again and measure what you already have in the vehicle for peace if mind.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the oil level warning will trigger if the vehicle lost 2qts and the equivalent in liters...

Good luck
