2000 X5 climate controls

I have the individual climate control system for driver and passenger, all digital. Lately cold mornings, start the car and it lights up as normal. Then when you press abutting to up or down the temp the whole unit goes dark and stops blowing air etc. Then 15-30 seconds and it comes back on again. it will go through this process for a few minutes then stabilizes and all works well ? Any ideas ??

This was my first pull of my 4000# boat. Truck pulled effortlessly I was very impressed with transmission and how it adjusted to the load etc. And the Xdrive yanked it up the ramp like a pro. I use to pull it with a Expedition and it seemed to work harder.

Search FSR or Final Stage Resistor.

Based from my experience

- Blower resistor (fsr) as prop recommended
- or Ikha reset
- or Auxiliary fan

Just an FYI so that some Bimmerphiles don't look at you crossed eyed if you discuss this in the future...the early e53 X5s (2000-2003 model years)...don't actually have xDrive. They have an AWD system with a 38/62 torque split between the front/rear axles...with the larger bias toward the rear. It works very similar to the previous generation e30/e34 "ix" BMWs but with the addition of ABS/DSC kicking in to help with traction on a slipping wheel.

The e53 didn't get xDrive until the facelift (2004-2006) model years.

Before xDrive, BMW offered 4WD as an option in the 1980s for the 3 series and the 5 series. The system had a planetary center differential with a permanent 38-62 (front-back) torque split. Both the center and rear differential had a viscous lock which would engage automatically if slippage occurred (one shaft rotated at a significantly different speed compared to the other). The front differential had no lock of any kind.

4WD was again offered for the X5 and the 2001 3 series. The system was similar to the earlier system except without any of the locks. Instead, slipping wheels would be braked with the DSC system, helping transfer power to the wheels with traction.
