2000 X5 climate controls

I have the individual climate control system for driver and passenger, all digital. Lately cold mornings, start the car and it lights up as normal. Then when you press abutting to up or down the temp the whole unit goes dark and stops blowing air etc. Then 15-30 seconds and it comes back on again. it will go through this process for a few minutes then stabilizes and all works well ? Any ideas ??

This was my first pull of my 4000# boat. Truck pulled effortlessly I was very impressed with transmission and how it adjusted to the load etc. And the Xdrive yanked it up the ramp like a pro. I use to pull it with a Expedition and it seemed to work harder.
