Tight Steering

My X5 steering is pretty tight, some times more than others. I know it doesnt have servotronic - so Im wondering if the racks typically go bad or the steering column shaft?

When turning it sometimes (usually) has tight spots. Anyone experienced this? I just don't want the shaft to snap going 80mph, if that is even possible.

Thanks for the help.

Its that joint in the steering shaft. Try lubing it up with lithium grease first. Could be rack, but that joint will be almost free to try and lube up.

Is it visible just by popping the hood?

Yeah, I think the shaft is bad/worn out. Im assuming this is typical? Since it has the tight spots in it, im thinking that its the knuckles in the u-joints in the shaft. It got a tiny bit better after soaking it with lithium grease.

We have a member here from the middle east that had the same problem, he solved it by replacing the steering shaft u-joint. Posted photos too.

I replaced mine as well but because it was loose, not tight. Straight line stability improved greatly!
