transmission issue

Hi,

I have a 2002 x5 3.0 with 108000 miles. When I put in D or R today, the car won't move and the engine just rev up. I don't see any error message on the dashboard.
Anyone has the same problem before?

Check the fluid level. Car must be level. Engine must be running and trans in neutral or park when you open the fill plug, some fluid should drizzle out, if none your fluid level is low. Don't open the fill plug with the engine off or you going to dump out a lot of fluid if the trans is correctly filled.

These symptoms are often linked to the transfer case output gears going bad.

Sounds like front driveshaft splines wore out in the transfer case. Can you push the vehicle with the transmission in Park if the parking brake is off?

Transmission is done. Quoted $9000 to replace. Only got $500 for trade in to a new one. I towed the car 5 times back and fro already. So there is nothing I can do.

There are remanufactured units available for much less money (I've seen $2500-$3500) that come with three year warranties. Find your model and google it with "Remanufactured".

Sometimes just changing the Fluid can help, Ive had customers who've noticed better driveability after flushing and putting in our Synthetic transmission oil. Also you can check the local pick and pull, I got a manual trans for my buddies GLI for $100 (its probably going to more expensive then that, but nowhere near 9000)

If one or more shops have looked at it and determined the transmission needs to come out, I think it is disingenuous to suggest that the OP should buy your transmission fluid because that may somehow fix it.

A transmission fluid change may improve shifting characteristics if the old fluid is out of spec, but no transmission fluid repairs broken components.

OP never said there was a broken part. Thermal breakdown can diminish the viscosity the oil, especially at that mileage if the fluid was never changed the fluid has been broken down which effects the fluidity and the oils ability to lubricate not to mention the additive have most likely broken down, including the anti-foaming additives which will prevent proper operation of the transmission and is a good indication of the need for new fluid, without proper lubrication the components such as the gears will have difficulty catching also the absence of the anti-foaming additives can cause aeration forming bubbles in the oil which can cause serious damage to your transmission. I'm not just a salesman speaking out the seat of his pants my friend
