2003 X5 4.6IS Front Brake Pads - Local to Buy Choices

Have done some reading today regarding people's advice's on the replacement of the front brake pads.

I know that the best is from The Bmw directly , but when i called they said for the front is $231.51 plus tax , wow... really good price.

To buy online , not sure if i can wait as i may have to change them this weekend.

I did some research, and i also asked the dealer regarding the regarding "dust" getting on the rim, and they said , they do some dust , but they will not s-quick .

I went to napa ,as they are a sec. place where you can find stuff really closed to original (i leaft autozone and oreillyauto alone , as they may have some junk stuff pads)

Now, at napa they do have quite few pairs for front , and i was looking at this:
NAPA AUTO PARTS,
NAPA Ultra Premium Brake Parts at $85 lifetime
################################################## ########
Premium Engineered Friction Formulations: Semi-Met
OE Exact Style Slot, Shim, & Chamfer, Where Applicable.
Several OE & Aftermarket Equivalent Friction Formulations, The Most In The Industry.
Quiet Friction Formulations.
Guaranteed Quiet & Certified Safe.
Noise Free Guarantee For The Life Of The Pads.
################################################## ########

They do have some cheaper and some over 100$, but i think is little to much to spend right this moment.

My pads have the Dual Caliper system and looks like they don't have many at the parts store like this.

So anyone have used that napa brand? from above?.

Any advice on this will appreciate.

Thanks

This link will answer all your questions on pads. The4.6 and the 4.8is share the same caliper and pads. Make sure you buy what your SAV needs not what the loacl NAPA dealer is selling. I believe that Raybestos makes those pads if they are selling the good ones. Take at look at the link and look on Rockauto.com for the additional options.

This link talks about rotors also which you will need when replcaing pads if you want to have a safe and secure stopping power.

Oh, Cool Carbon does NOT make pads for our X5 models only the slower ones...... They have them for the rear only, but to make your vehicle solid you need the same brand front and rear.

Good luck

I do understand the sentiment of trying to save where you can in service and maintenance.

That being said, I think no-name parts are a bad idea for a critical system such as brakes.

Especially since this is a high performance vehicle that is pretty heavy, putting a lot of stress on brakes.

For such a critical component I would get BMW OE or if I could find out who makes them for BMW, that company's part.

If I couldnt get OE/OE equivalent I would look for parts from a company known as an OE manufacturer, or from a manufacturer of high performance brake systems and parts, if possible.

Get some name brand ceramic pads, they won't dust up your wheels like the factory pads. You can tell when a person is running factory pads on their European made vehicle, the front wheels will be nasty as hell while the rears are clean...lol!

Thanks guys for the really good advice! in the morning will look around to see what i find ,
and also waiting for the spending budget limit from the boss (wife ) , then i can see what i will buy.

I never changed the front yet, from the time a purchased the x5,but yes, rear is all clean and the front all the time gets dusty really bad,so ya the front may have the OE.

Now regarding the front rotors, if i decide to re-surface them ,will that work for now? , they look okay ,but just to be smooth , and maybe next time to change them...with new ones!, also i have read somewhere , some guy smooth them with his grinder and 25 grid disc !, hmm , can you do that? hmm, interesting.

Thanks!

My rotors were in great shape, i got the axxis deluxe pads fo 48$. Just did my rears $22 pads, $139 ecs geomet xdrilled rotors. Anyone who pays $231 for bmw pads is a fool. And before someone on here says somehing about my prices and "quality" they are all name brand great reviewed parts and mine are put to the tests car driven like its stolen.

I didnt resurface or sand my front rotors, just put on the new pads and bedded them in properly. They work great and 90% of the dust is gone..

The amount i get after a week of driving now is what i got with 20 miles on the factory semi metallics.

Semi metallics dust alot and are harder on the rotors. Although they are best for the initial "cold bite".

Axxis deluxe is organic mix, i think some ceramic in there too, and it keeps 80% of that semi met cold bite but super low dust.

Ceramics are good and usually dont dust much either, but on some you lose more of the cold bite, although once warm they work great as well.

Right now in running solid rotors up front (no xdrilled or slotted) cause i kept the old ones, with axxis deluxe pads.

Rears i did the other day- ecstuning geomet xdrilled/slotted and powerstop ceramic pads.
