The first video sounds like the timing chain slapping against the guides on start-up, some say it's a normal sound the Vanos makes with age. If your chain tensioner is worn the timing chain will slowly beat up the timing chain guides which are made of plastic. You didn't say how many miles are on your car, so it could be time to replace them anyway, yes it's a normal maintenance item. It looks like you don't post on the site often, if you notice there are a lot of threads lately about timing chain guides, as most of our cars have between 125K-200K miles on them. Depending on where you take it, the repair costs can run anywhere from $2000-$5000, or you can do it yourself, it's a lot of work though.

i have 2002 x5 4.6is timing guides failed last year with about 103,000, had it repaired for $2400, has about 110k now and have had the rattle start up since ive owned it. i don't post much in here but i do creep on this forum all the time, very helpful info. i just have no idea what could cause that braided oil hose to vibrate/whine so bad really annoying. i took it by the shop that did the guide repair and he has never seen that before on the v8s. said he will do some research and get back to me. Was hoping someone here has experienced this annoying vibration noise that makes a whining noise in the cabin when taking off from a stop.

I have that noise. I have the 4.8is, and it seems to be right around 2200 rpm. Every gear. Can't seem to find where it is coming from. Mine almost feels like an exhaust leak, but I can't find a leak too.

yeah im starting to think i have an exhaust leak or manifolds are warped or gaskets need replacing because i can hear exhaust at my feet when i start it cold until they heat up and seal somewhat and my mufflers have a sucking noise to them. how do i test for exhaust leaks?

Seal up the pipes in the back. See if exhaust comes out anywhere else. On a lift is best
