P2185 code after engine warms up - Anyone seen & solved this one?

E53 with 86,000 miles.

Throws a P2185 code. After I reset it, service engine light remains off until engine gets good and warm and then it comes on again.

I've searched but not found much more than: P2185 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High

Is it a simple DIY? Anyone solved it?

what year / engine do you have?

Make sure your indy or mech didn't "top off" with incorrect coolant. It could just be a faulty sensor too.

I know that when this happened to me, my local "oil changer" guy had put in a bit of coolant, off by 2 degrees and it was enough to set off the sensor.

I had it flushed by my indy and it went away.

Feels fine, drives fine as best I can tell. My wife is the primary driver of the X5.

Might be time for a coolant flush. Never a bad idea before summer hits in Los Angeles. It's been 2, maybe 3 years. I'd have to check the records.

First thing I would do is check to see if the temp gauge at operating temperature is in the normal position or actually measure the coolant temperature. That will eliminate most other potential causes if temp is normal.

I would check / clean the connections for the sensor

Happy to report it's solved. New temp sensor via Amazon $29.50 with Prime shipping (BMW (13 62 1 433 077) Coolant Temperature Sensor), and a coolant flush. The old sensor had visible damage to the connector when removed.
