If the key won't charge I believe the guy that does BMW GM5 repairs for the e46 3 series also does key batteries and repairs. My folks had him do a GM5 and it worked out well.

I second Vonbimmer's recommendation of the GM5 guy. I had an issue with the door locks on the E46M3. I explained what was going on b/c I thought it was the GM5 module. He said it was the actuator. Replaced the actuator and the problem is gone. Easily could have sold me a 'repaired' GM5 but instead just helped me solve the problem.
