Okay so I've already searched the forums looking for a explanation and now I'm totally baffled. I have a 2006 X5 3.0 with 104,000 mi. We bought it with 97,000 miles on it. We are going through a qt of oil every 1,000 miles. No visible leaks and sometimes a little smoke from the exhaust when you put your foot in it but very little. The engine runs like a banshee!! plenty of power and no idle issues. So I see where BMW will say that this consumption is well in specs????? I've never owned a vehicle where this is normal. I know on american vehicles we used to see PVC valves go bad and the engine sucks the oil out and burns it but this is very noticeable. I don't mind adding a qt every 1,000 mi. but I worry the warning quits and we run it dry just cause we don't think about it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would always carry at least two quarts in the X. I would then make a routine (which should be a common practice), to check the oil every week on a particular day. Saturday morning is when I check and usually clean my cars. If you are driving more than 500 miles a week, then I would sugest checking it twice a week. If it becomes routine you will not forget.

Which oil? Go thicker weight.

Maybe check it for compression. If you don't see if leaking out, its probably burning up. I would pay a good shop to evaluate it if you are like me and lack the tools or skill to tackle something that is not "obvious."

I know 40w helps considerably with the N62 in relation to the consumption.

I use Rotella T6 5w-40 year round and takes me about 2500 miles to go through a quart.
Make sure your CCV isn't clogged up as well.

Ricky Bobby, is there an easy way to tell if the CCV is clogged?
