Also keep in mind its good to do a couple full throttle runs once the vehicles warmed up to burn condensation in the crankcase (get the cobwebs outta the exhaust as my dad always says) also isnt a bad habbit to pop the oil fill cap to let it air out and relieve pressure. Just dont forget to put it back on haha

So I finished up the X5 yesterday.
I changed the oil with Penzoil Euro 5w40, replaced the air filter, changed out all the plugs with NGK Iridium, dumped a bottle of Gumout Rengane, and cleaned the crankcase ventilation valves. The car is noticeably smoother at idle with the new plugs. I haven't noticed the engine running any quieter running the 5w40. The crankcase valves were not NEARLY as gunked up as the pictures I've seen online. I DID however notice tears in each of the rubber boots...which will be replaced shortly. I'm still not convinced that any of these caused the car to randomly shut off. But after seeing the plugs, I CAN see how they'd misfire. These are pictures of the plugs. I'm not sure what the cylinder numbers are, but starting with the the front of the car working back on the drivers side, then back to the front working back on the passengers side... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thoughts?

those are pretty bad, could have been the potential cause of the stalling. The rubber boots definitely should be replaced. If you notice any of the symptoms coming back let me know because the main things have been taken care of so you should be good.

Thanks for replying back.
Based on the condition of the plugs, is it safe to say they COULD have been the cause of the random misfires as well stalling? Especially since I had experienced one case of misfiring during relatively warm weather (low 50°). And yeah, I'm going to be ordering those boots shortly. Mike

Yep, because theyre the original plugs with the 4 prong design (its just like fords 2 piece plugs for the tritom motors-dumb), the anodizing you see shows it was running too hot (pre ignition usually) and the fact theyre all burnt out like that, its safe to say the plugs could have a main culprit. Lemme know if it comes back at all, otherwise we are golden.
