possible NAV donor

Hi

I've got a chance to take NAV unit and replace may basic MID with single CD just above it. Beside the LCD display unit what else do I need to take from donor vehicle and where is it located? Is it likely that I would have all the wiring or would I need that too?

My MID has problem with pixels. I may keep it in and replace the CD with standard stereo with AUX etc. I've got one but not sure if it can be done. Had a look at wiring and looks possible as antenna would be powered from my new head unit and everything should work. Could not find a fascia that does not include the MID but only the replacement single DIN head unit. MID would be then only for trip computer usage.

In addition to the screen unit you'll need the nav drive (back left corner electronics bay), the stereo module (trunk well under the spare tire), GPS antenna (spoiler in rear trunk lid), and wiring harness. Pretty major project, but several here have done it.

OK. Can I at least go for plan B - standard single DIN instead of CD player just above MID?

Its about a $2800 swap if you buy the parts yourself.

You need the Nav screen/monitor itself, the wire harness which needs to be run from the trunk, the board computer, the MK4 dvd module, and a few other things which I'm forgetting.

The following is from Bimmernav.com:

BMW Original MKIV navigation computer Refurbished

BMW Original Widescreen Display Refurbished

BMW Original BM53 Radio - LATEST 2006 North American version! NEW-with optional upgrade to European BM54 radio radio for Euro Customers

BMW Retrofit Wiring harness and complete brackets, GPS antenna and trim pieces to convert from no navigation to navigation equipped.

If your BMW was built prior to 09/01 you will need a set of adapter cables that can be purchased from your BMW dealer for approx
$125.00 USD
Convert Currency.

BMW X5 2000-2006 E53 BMW COMPLETE X5 Navigation Retrofit Kit

You'll need Map dvd too

As you can see it's a major retrofit, you just about have to remove the interior to run the cables for the antenna and DVD player wires. On top of that, you'll be installing a system that's antiquated and outdated by today's standards, it's not even a touch screen. I installed one of the aftermarket units that you can find on Ebay, yes they're made in China but I've never had any problems with mine, it's awesome! If you have a DSP factory sound system it will not be plug and play, if no DSP it will be plug and play, you'll still have to cut the dash to install it.

Finally, use the search function here, there are several threads about these aftermarket units, just search for Hualingan (I have this one), Dynavin, and Eonon, plus one or two more I can't remember. As for Ebay, search for "BMW X5 navigation", you'll find lots of units to pick from.
