The X has 2 fuel level senders due to the shape of the fuel tank.
Do you have the high instrument cluster? Unlock the OBC diagnostics and there is a test there that shows real time output of both fuel tank level senders. If one or both show "0", it's often the floats.

Ditto... That would be OBC TEST 6...the first screenshows the data being sent by the left & right level sensors + the approx amount of fuel left in the tank (in liters). And the 2nd screen of TEST 6 will show the total amount of fuel iin tank + Phase 1, 2, or 3...where PHASE 1= all ok, PHASE 2 & 3 mean something is wrong:
screen 1 of TEST 6 - High Instrument Cluster
screen 2 of TEST 6 High Instrument Cluster ![]() ![]()

Fuel level sender
I don't have the mpg think on my dash. Is that still the same case then? Real oem shows one level sender and one pump sender driver side. Pump passenger side

RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0i Fuel pump and fuel level sensor
One is labelled as a sender, other is delivery unit. You will notice both have a float on them (box with then metal rod sticking out of assembly). One or both are probably defective. The test Qsilver linked will show you if that is the case.

Same on all E53's. Just replaced the float on a 4.6is after first diagnosing via test above.

My X5 3.0i 2001 have same problem. The fuel level meter have been show only between 40 and 60 when I filled full tank for awhile, and I let this problem running seem not a big deal. One day, my car suddenly stop on the road and I found that the fuel level meter was pointed between 20 and 30. After that, the engineer found the fuel tank was empty and need to replace both side sensors. Finished the replacement, the fuel level can be go to MAX when I filled full tank again, so kept driving. Few day later, the car stop on the road again and the fuel level meter still pointed between 20 and 30, this was same as last time and I alerted it may tank empty again, so I fill up same fuel and the car can be started. Then I back to the engineer, he said the sensor have been replaced the new one and those are not OEM version. He cannot explained why it will be happened. After that, he re-install both sensor once again and try to run out all the fuel to see the fuel level meter can or not be going to 0 with warning light. The result is good. Then I collect back the car and go to fill full tank, the first problem found again, the fuel level meter was pointed between 40 and 60.
Now the meter can go to 0 with warning light but still cannot go to MAX. Please help... Last edited by hongkongloftus; 05-26-2014 at 06:14 AM. |
