Control module...??

Our 06 X5 3.0 Step/65,000 miles died last Sunday...It had previously had an SES that "went away" and stalled while stopped at a light a few times...always restarted...my wife ran it low on fuel .... low fuel light just came on....and I went to fill it...it didn't make the gas station....just quit and would not restart.
Flat bedded to our indie shop, still no start, then refused to crank.
They removed the "control module" and sent it to a local place to be checked.
I'm still waiting word, what is this "module" anyway, like a computer circuit??
tnx Daniel

Could be the EWS module which is the anti-theft system for the X.

Strange that it wouldn't start but still crank and now it doesn't crank. I would have them look at the condition of the battery. If you have a spare key I would give them the spare key and see if the engine cranks. The chip in the key might not be giving the signal to disable the EWS.

With only 65,000 miles on the X was the battery ever changed on the X?

A dealer or an Indy with the right software should be able to scan the EWS module with software to determine if that is the problem.

It's a way of buying time - just like "the parts are on order".

I'm surprise that being with the BMWCCA for over 35 years, there isn't any members in your area that you could call that can scan your cars.

I'm not a BMWCCA member but was a PCA member and Lotus member and during my membership in those clubs I was always more then willing to help a member in need.

without the code - pure speculation... but...

started as fuel related and then a secondary problem, battery or alarm?

You should have your Indy put a couple of gallons of gas in it.

I would have tried this before the flatbed option.

The battery is less than 2 years old, and IIRC I ran it down a bit lower on gas once before, on the Northern part of I 95 in FL at night there weren't any gas stations, or exits and I really got panicked, it went to 10 miles left...this time the light had just come don, I think 40 miles left, so I didn't even think that could be a problem...then with the stalling ???

Well, it's ALIVE...... turns out it was the IGNITION SWITCH ?? (bad contacts, and, we don't hang a lot of keys on the switch)
Filled it to the top with 22 1/2 gallons.

I think there's a recall on that, wait it's on GM cars, but with the most of the X being made in the USA I wonder if it's the same supplier?

So does that mean you're going to keep it?
