So, does this thing serve any function, or is it just an appearance item? Does it keep water/spray off the back window? Generate any noise?

I haven't noticed it keeping spray off the back window, it might help since there is an upward curve but I doubt it. I don't get much on my back window since I keep it clayed and clean along with the other glass, and sealed with Rain-X or similar, even with the rear wiper delete I notice no ill effects but thats for another thread.
It's purely for looks, does not generate any noise, just looks nice. I bought mine pre-painted for $90 (actually my wife got it for Christmas for me), color match and quality was dead on and shipped from Taiwan in 10 days.

If it doesn't bother me with a color matched piece, I hardly think it would bother you being black! If you really wanted you could get some sandpaper and a pack of bondo and fill the indent and sand it smooth before spraying it.

I got my spoiler off ebay. It was a hard plastic that I had primed and painted gloss black to match all the accents on my X. @ first I mounted it with the double sided tape that was provided with the spoiler then it started falling off. So I then used window urethane to glue it down permanently after deciding how much I loved the look...
