ECS Tuning Roof Spoiler

Has anyone purchased / installed the following universal roof spoiler from ECS Tuning on their E53 X5?

BMW E53 X5 M54 3.0L Search Clearance - LS-40 - Lip Spoiler - 40" - ES#2730721

I like that it:

  • Comes in a Matte / Satin Black Finish (I'm not interested in painting)
  • Made from a Vinyl / Rubber like material (Should be durable)
  • Does not have the ACS Roof Spoiler logo indent (Not a fan of logos or indent)
  • It comes with the 3M tape pre-installed (Saves me time)
  • It's priced well at $29.95 + Shipping (Might be worth the risk at this price)
They have several length options, but I believe our E53 X5 requires the 40" (hoping someone can confirm)?

I realize these can be purchased on eBay, but none of them hit my points above (I'd love for someone to prove me wrong).

Look forward to your comments

Sam that one looks similar to my ACS rep spoiler, but is more sharply edged, if that makes sense? I could take a close up pic for you to show you the profile of the spoiler from the side.

For double sided tape you can get the 3M double sided at Pep girls or auto parts store if you needed to.

I understand you want it matte/satin black but this is just primed, its not actually painted satin black. I would recommend getting it done professionally so that you don't just slap a painted piece on.

I don't like the indent on mine but since mine is painted you really don't notice it, and I would not put an ACS sticker on mine either.

Just my .02, since you are set on doing matte/satin black I would say just get the unpainted version on ebay that is a known ACS replica, this looks more universal and its a gamble at 20 bucks cheaper IMO. The unpainted spoilers will look like that one as well when they come in, primed and flat black.

I prefer the ACS rep, more rounded shape that blends into the E53 shape better.

FWIW, I got the ACS wing unfinished and used Rust-Oleum satin black to finish (last summer). Even with the TX/FL sun/heat it's held up.

Thanks Jay!

I've looked at a lot of pictures of the ACS rep and know exactly what you mean with respect to the shape. I'm just not sure if it bothers me yet.

With respect to the tape, I've never had success finding it at the Auto Parts store. I may simply be looking in the wrong place. I also like the fact that the ECS comes with it (most, if not all, on eBay don't).

I actually contacted ECS today and they informed me that their spoiler is not primed. It is a black rubber like material that's paintable. This tells me it's black all the way through (great for durability).

I haven't given up on the ACS yet, but this one is a contender (the research continues).

TiAgX5, that's exactly the look I'm going for. I love the contrast, and call me crazy but I feel it ties in well with the rear bumper (lower black portion).

Nice job, thanks for sharing

Thanks< I like the contrast too.

I couldn't find the correct .06" thick 3M acrylic tape at ANY auto supply store, had to order a 10 yd roll off Amazon.

If you get a wing sans tape, shoot me a private message with your address, I will send you a length to apply the wing.

I shot the fog bezels along with the wing, like how it ties into the lower plastic.

Thanks, I'll definitely take you up on that if / when the time comes.

I'm glad I'm not alone with respect to having difficulty finding the tape

Sam in that case just get the unpainted wing off ebay (ACS replica) for $40 and get a roll of tape from Tiag, you can spray it with a rattle can and have best of both worlds!

I wholheartedly recommend Rustoleum Universal (great on plastic) or Krylon Fusion (satin black available) if you are going to rattle can the spoiler

So, does this thing serve any function, or is it just an appearance item? Does it keep water/spray off the back window? Generate any noise?

I haven't noticed it keeping spray off the back window, it might help since there is an upward curve but I doubt it. I don't get much on my back window since I keep it clayed and clean along with the other glass, and sealed with Rain-X or similar, even with the rear wiper delete I notice no ill effects but thats for another thread.

It's purely for looks, does not generate any noise, just looks nice. I bought mine pre-painted for $90 (actually my wife got it for Christmas for me), color match and quality was dead on and shipped from Taiwan in 10 days.
