The slam you ask about is when you slow down to stop and it feels like
someone rear ended you. Instead it's the transmission spinning down and reengaging.
Not common for all E53's but common enough.

2002 X5 and still runs smooth

I purchased mine privately in 2005 with 50K. Now has 128K. Just had new tires and it rides like a new car....except it's in transport mode right now because i left it for a month. Last year it was left out in a hail storm and the insurance company gave me $5K to remove the dents which I haven't done so the way I look at it the car is now free and will drive it 'til it dies which I don't think it will.
