4.8is Front End Noise

See video:
2006 e53 X5 4.8is front end noise - YouTube
(turn up your headphones)

I had heard this noise that seemed to get progressively more noticeable once the snow melted. I thought it was road noise from my snow tires but when I changed to my summers it sounded more prominent.

The vibration/noise sounds like the front diff. There is no significant feedback at the steering wheel. Its present under access and decell but easier to hear when your foot is off the throttle for obvious reasons.

Any thoughts?

Could be front diff....but, more often than not the front wheel bearings could be bad.

Good Luck!

Either wearing at 108,000 km is odd... isn't it?

I've seen posts of folks having to replace bearings, diffs, tranny's & etc....with less than 50,000 miles on their ride. Its all about driving habits, road & environmental conditions. Its amazing what extreme cold and heat can do to our rides unannounced.
Have a "trusted" garage check your wheel bearings and diff for wear before you start throwing money at it.

Good Luck!

I'm not aiming to take it to a shop.

I checked the bearings and there is no play on the drivers side where the sound is coming from. The axel and CV joints have a bit of in-out play but thats it. Not much for backlash.

The guibo is in good shape on the fwd drive shaft connection. I've driven 2000km since I have changed to summer tires and the noise has not appeared to have changed.

Occasionally (once every 3+ hours of driving) the wheel wants to pull the vehicle to the right then when I steer back its centered and fine. Which is also very odd...

I'm also getting a ghost signal about my tire pressure warning - indicating one of my wheel speeds might not be same every once in a while or there is a fault on detection. No ABS light.

I'll get it up on a hoist this week and do some more digging but if anyone else has had a similar issue please share.
