what date of manufacture e53 has the rls module ?
Is this windshield with the rls compatible with my car?
I do understand that i need to upgrade the lcm also as i did this mod on my e46.

did you look it up at www..realoem.com yet? Using your VIN,, then going to VEHICLE TRIM (maingroup) and GLAZING (sub roup)....should list all the options under item #1 for the various windshields:
  1. s160a - regular plain windshield
  2. s521a -windshield with rain sensor
  3. s358a - windshield with climate comfort (infrared)

Its listed in the FROM column...10/2001. There is no distinction for rain & light sensor...they're one in the same.

BTW, if you are looking to do something extra...please clue us in. Based on the info you provided...was the reason I replied as I did. If you're looking to do something different or add something we don't know about...we can't answer your inquiry accordingly. Your VIN lists the multiple options listed for the windshields availble for your vehicle...when I enter my 06 VIN (lv24133)...the same options for windshields comeup...and I have the adaptive headlight option and auto bi-xenon headlights, and rain sensor. So apparently the 10/2001 date is some type of starting point.

Hope this helps in some way.

EDIT: i figured it out

The light sensor is built into the rain sensor...but the windshiield only provides a place for the sensor...the sensor is NOT built into the windshield.

When you look up the rain sensor...it lists two components...a rain sensor...and a rain & light sensor (interestingly that starts with the 10/2001 build date). Checkout the link and diagram below (used your VIN)):

see my edited reply above about the 2 types of rain sensors.

Any of the windshields can be installed...but choose the one with the part nbr for the option codes you need...plain, rain sensor, or comfort w/rain sensor. If you require the light sensor...it's built into the rain sensor...so you'll need to make sure you get the correct rain sensor for the options you have or need. The sensor will fit the location on the appropriate windshield.
