The first "shift" of the day.....
When I start the car-up in the morning and head out of my driveway (reverse) and start down my street (usually forward - lol) ) - I notice that the first "shift" from 1-2 seems a bit abrupt and very unsophisticated for a BMW. This behavior doesn't last long (1 or 2 shifts at most) and seems to be a little more abrupt in very cold weather. This isn't new behavior - I've noticed it for quite a while now. Maybe since I bought it two years ago. Outside of that the trans shifts very smooth under all other driving conditions. I've never checked my trans fluid level - I probably should. Anyone else have something similar on theirs? Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Mine does that too. And I was told by my indy shop that this is normal.

Read about the warm up cycle and some well documented tech info from various sources in the attached thread.

Also a forum member PM me ( worth checking)
Was worried sick that I'd have to have transmission rebuilt. Turned out to be that transmission filter had lost it's good seal & was sucking some air. After the fluid warmed up the truck would run just perfect all the time.

Mine had the hard 1-2 shift out of the gate. I did a full seal, filter and fluid swap, reset the tranny and it was shifting very smooth. Now I only had it on the road 24h before it went back in, but it was a noticeable difference and the hard shifts were gone. Need to get it back and put some more miles on it though. Car had 185,000km and this was first fluid swap.

Let's see....
Bottom line nothing last forever ( even a manual tranny have it's own hiccups down the road)

I've wondered similar on the rough 1-2 shift when the tranny is cold. I've also wondered if the trans fluid might be a little low. Some posts about people who have changed fluid and not fully filled having rough shifts when cold. Theory being that after fluid warms up it expands just enough so it is no longer under filled.

Cold shifts were not bad, just started to be noticeably different. Changed fluid and filter and there was definitely an improvement.
