Trip computer reset (MPG)

Is there a way of reseting trip computer (MPG mainly) without using MID?

I am looking into replacing MID with another non OEM stereo. They all claim to support wheel controls but not found one that can reset MPG.

No...not if you have the HIGH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER and either the HIGH MID or NAVIGATION monitor...because the MID (or Nav screen) is the controller for the OBC features...as well as the display for several components (hence the name MID {multi-informational display}).

The MID is the component that controls the CLOCK, PHONE, OBC, DSP, and AUDIO...it does no calculations of it's own...it just receives the data/info from the components that are connected to it...and it is how you start/stop/set/reset the info that is sent to it.

There are 2 versions of MIDs...a LOW (base) version & a HIGH version. The HIGH version has the BC icon on the lower right button that it shares with the "clock face" button (see red arrows in illustration below). The OBC features can only be set/reset/started/stopped using the MID if the latter is the set-up you have. If you have onBoard Navigation...this applies as well...the OBC features can only be set/reset/startred/stopped using the prompts from the navigation screen.

The only set-up that allows set/reset of the MPG & MPH calculations using the turn signal stalk is if you have the low instrument cluster & low MID set-up. The OBC features on the LOW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER of Range/AMBIENT TEMP/MPG/MPH is controlled by the button on the tip of the turn signal stalk:

(description of LOW (BASE) INSTRUMENT CLUSTER from the owners manual)

(LOW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER with its check control system's GRAPHIC DISPLAY -vs- the HIGH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER with its check control system's 20 digit ALPHA/NUMERIC display )

Thanks for very detailed reply. I have the higher version where OBC reset is only on MID.

Guess I am stuck with it then. I have no AUX button on it so trying to find out if I could fit AUX IN line somehow so I could play mp3 to it. At the moment I am using external FM transmiter-player

Keep your eyes peeled, word on the street that the new Dynavin N6 will have integrated Ibus and OBC functionality.

Some owners in your situation have extended the wiring and moved the MID to the glove box...then tapped their aftermarket set-up into the wiring harness.

I'm sure there's probably a video on youtube...or a DIY on some of the BMW forums that cover this generation of BMWs (e46/e39/e38/e53)...that have the same BUS system and basic electronics design architecture.
