Drain plug radiator leaking.
My drain plug radiator is leaking after I replaced it. Since the radiator is inexpensive I think it would be wise and easy to just buy a new radiator. But I just need to be sure. Is the drain plug in the actual radiator, real oem part: 17101439101 RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0d RADIATOR/FRAME What other hose and (plastic) part would be wise to replace.

Are you sure your drain plug didn't crack? They are cheap plastic and will crack over time.

It started with the cap on the plastic plug broke. And when I drilled it out the hole apparently got bigger. So as a last resort I treaded it out to 12mm and screwed a metal plug with plumbing tape. but it still leaking, just when the engine is really hot.
But the part with the plug seems just to be plastic and not a part of the radiator. But it most be, right?!

By the time the rad drain plug cracks, it probably has more than 100K miles.
At that mileage, one should consider "Cooling Overhaul" to prevent disaster... To give you an idea what "Cooling Overhaul" involves, here it is for M52 engine, M54 similar: ENTIRE COOLING SYSTEM REPLACEMENT Tips and Tricks (Very Long, Enjoy!)

There's a little trick you can use next time to extract the remains of the broken rad plug without resorting to drilling & tapping. Take a small straight screwdriver, and heat the end up good and hot. Stick the hot end into the remains plug and hold while it cools down...then just turn the screwdriver.

the info on "Cooling Overhaul" is very good, thanks!
I did tried the "heating a screwdriver", but the plug was still stuck

FYI, many people in E39 forum lost their M52 and M54 engine because of cooling system failure: Water Pump, tstat housing falling apart, radiator broke etc.
This is why it is better than overhaul all items once and for all.
