Ditto on having a thorough PPI by a reputable indy bimmer shop, and during the PPI have Blackstone samples pulled from the auto tranny and oil [if the oil has some mileage on it, and especially if the owner hasn't recently drained the ATF and changed the filter]. Here is a sample ATF from a 2001 3.0L I had pulled before negotiating my stepson-in-law's purchase of one last Fall that he has been pleased with. If the owner hasn't changed the ATF/tranny filter and the numbers look lots worse than these, or the ATF was recently changed and you get significant solids, etc., be prepared for a tranny rebuild in the future and negotiate that expected cost into the price.

I just purchased my 4.6is on Saturday, from a similar situation...i must say i LOVE it! things i checked have already been addressed by others. Bushings and Trans were my first concerns, but everything looked to be in good nic.
Best of luck on your decision!

Bought my 4.6 new. Longest I have ever kept a vehicle is 4 years. Still love it. My repair costs have been low in comparison to many. I have 108,000 hard miles on it. I rebuilt the suspension at around 95,000, not because it was failing but I wanted it to get back to how it felt when it was new. I plan to keep the 4.6 when i get my next vehicle, If PPI stands up I would move forward.

E53s are a relatively safe outlet for our collective obsessive-compulsive disorder
