Quality of BMW Backup Cam?

I've received a quote from my dealer to install one on my '05. Seems like they have a newer part number for the camera now and it ships from Germany.

I've searched all existing articles on it and am prepared to trigger on the install. Just a quick couple of questions...are people satisfied with the quality of the image on this camera and...more important does it provide a reasonable image at night? TIA

The OEM camera I have seen provides a pretty good image. Didn't get a chance to see it at night though. The only thing I don't like is the big black boxy looking thing they install on the rear. It is a little too obvious if you ask me. Secondly it points down...so you see the edge of your bumper but not necessarily what is directly behind you!

I went with an aftermarket solution (there's ton's available now including infra red cameras) which I installed into the emblem. Much more discreet. I don't see the edge of my bumper, but get a clear view of everything behind me. The PDC helps judge the distance to any object behind.

Hey King,
I think I saw a pic of that emblem cam install in another forum here & It's SWEEEET!
I might be looking to do the same soon. For now, without cameras or IR, I'm relying on the pleasant surprise that the X5 is actually smaller to park than my 740iL was! But that said, I think the upgrade only makes sense, especially keeping in mind broken glass on the road or a kid dashing out behind the car (!).

A Quick Q: What other locations (if any) did you install cams or sensors? There seem to be an array of options from 1 sensor to 12-16, depending on coverage. Anyone's .02? TIA.

KIng, sweeeet setup on the backup cam.

I'm trying to do the same for mine, installing the cam on the roundel.

Thanks for the reply...I agree that the OE solution is less than ideal and I prefer your stealth install. I guess I'm looking for the easy and quick solution and just wanted to make sure the OE route wasn't a poor image as well (not worth it then). FYI...the camera on my '06 Honda Odyssey Touring is amazing...I only hope this one is in the ballpark.

Can you buy the Honda camera and use that one w/the BMW install?

Breyton, If i was to do it again, I would try to find a camera that comes with a black trim piece instead of the chrome plastic that mine came with. It looked like metal when I got it but after a while the plastic chrome started flaking off. I also notice some condensation on the inside now and I may have to take it out and clean it. Mind you, I have had it installed for over a year now and the weather here can change 30 degrees overnight! The best rear cam I've seen is actually on the Lexus trucks. But if you're installing your own aftermarket cam, there's lots out there...

That would be great, but then BMW won't touch the install and I'm a bit short of time to go the research and DIY route. I'm biting the bullet and getting the OE BMW camera installed today. I'll post back regarding night vision and comparison to the Honda.
