Switching to Motul 300V Power 5W40
If anyone is using it and can leave some feedback that would be great.. modBargains sells it at 170$ for 10L..price includes a Hengst filter which by pt# looks to be OE...gotta email them to confirm before ordering.. Not the cheapest oil on the market but I'm ready to try this Group V oil. Below a basic explanation of what different groups mean Group I - mineral Group II/II+ - hydrocrak (VI below 120) Group III - hydrocrack (VI above 120, mineral derive "Fake Synthetic")---this is what the BMW oil is made of Group IV - polyalphaolefin (man made Synthetic) Group V - Ester & other un-group fluid (Ester or Polyolester, super high grade Synthetic, good for aircraft jet engine). And since we like pictures..here's one of the cool Motul bottle

Yeah, that is definitely good oil, a bit expensive but definitely quality.
From what I've gathered, ester based oils will do a really good job cleaning up your engine.

For $16 a quart/liter that oil better suk me and fuk me (I subtracted the cost of your $10 filter from the price)
Apparently the Rotella T6 I use is Group IV and made to compare to Mobil 1 Extended performance oil, I'll take it, and it's only $5.50 a quart. Interested to see how you like it but way too rich for my blood.

Regular oil, even the standard oil is fine.
Motul is good but overkill. In the final analysis, it makes no difference. I have seen BMW with 400K miles running on regular oil, with the oil changed every 5K.

Most important in my opinion is regular oil and filter changes more often, versus running some big money oil for longer time.
And id also look into more expensive oils if the vehicle was at the track alot of the time and getting beat up, motor at high rpm all the time etc. But for daily driving, and the occasional hard run or two... or three i dont see the point of spending more.I used synthetic in mine before, nothing like motul or something, but for the past 25-30k have been using valvoline synth blend maxlife for the reason of it helped reduce idle smoke. Once i replace the seals will go back to full syn. But like i said even running a normal mid grade oil changed every 5k, IMO is better then something higher end and running it for 10k. My oil change costs me about $50 with filter and 2 5qt jugs of Maxlife. I also beat on my car and dont see any difference.

Another oil thread? No arm wrestle but why? Aside from slick marketing is there something about the
hyped alternatives that will make the X run better, add horsepower or make the X look better? Hmmm I wonder.

Some of you guys are funny
No, not another oil thread where I ask for advice...there's a search button for that..just sharing what my decision is And my route is still 5000 miles in between oil changes no matter if it's 15 or 5$ a quart I'm testing new grounds..that's it...we'll see if I like it or not.

Seems to me "testing new ground" with oil would be swapping out the OE oil after break-in, then running a different oil with Blackstone testing. If you find issues you have NO idea when the issue started (old or new oil).
Switching to an oil that's 3X the cost after 8 yrs of vehicle operation is more like "switching boats midstream", when the 1st boat's not sinking. I run Mobil 1 0-40 LL-01 (5 qt jug, $25.) at 60% SII (3rd green LED turns off). 182k miles and spotless, production grind lines are still visible on the cam lobes and OE TC guides.........Pic was taken a few weeks ago, I didn't reset the camera date.

Send out to Blackstone for a report does you nothing, unless looking for immediate issues in the oil....need to get a ~couple~ OCI to get some trending going on, in order to get a better read.
With that said, I've run alot of fancy lubes in mine over the years...everything from diffys, to the oils. On my M54, I like the Castrol 0W30, and it provides fair value - I don't bother changing at mielage. Just change it 2X a year, when I'm swapping winter and summer tars. Yes, we do get that placebo effect after a nice fresh oil change... Don't get me wrong, do it. It's your $. If it makes you feel better, do it. |
