Locked out

I have a 2002 x5. Have both keys, although key fobs have not worked for a long time. Have been using key to manually open door, until yesterday, when door lock broke. Now locked out with everything inside. Police and lock company could not open. Fuse out(I think) so console unlock button not an option. Had towed and now panicking - they are wanting to break rear window. Please help!

Pay an auto glass company to remove the Front windshield and reinstall. Breaking a window is never a good option. Most of the good one have a mobile unit that will come to you so you won't have to get the X towed.

I am not sure. I thought I could - and have taken to local stores to see if they can and was told the BMW key cannot be opened. Do you know different?

There are people on the internet that can open and replace the battery in the key FOB. If you never did it before you will probably end up destroying the plastic key fob. The plastic key fob housing is available on line. The battery is solder to the circuit, so it not just open replace battery snap shut.

If you do the windshield thing...remember that if you locked the vehicle with the key (using the door lock cylinder) the doors are DOUBLE-LOCKED...which means that you can't just pull on the interior door handle to open the door.

First, the alarm is going to go off when they remove the windshield...which is going to be initiated by the IMS (interior motion sensor)...so you'll need to crawl into the car and do one of the things below:
  1. insert the key into the ignition and turn the ignition to position 2 (EWS recognition will turn off the anti-theft alarm siren (DWA) as well as release central locking (FZV)...you can then pull twice on an interior door handle to open a door.
  2. press the central lock/unlock button on the center console, then pull twice on an interior door handle (but it sounds like this won't work for you since you wrote that this button doesn't work).
For those that have an issue with their central locking system...or only have one key...take heed to the frustration the OP is enduring. If the manual unlocking feature of your vehicle is busted or the remote keys don't work...then you have no back up if the other way into the vehicle goes out. Or if you only have one key and you lock it inside the vehicle...or if the battery goes dead and the vehicle is locked, and the manual way in is busted...this same situation can show up at your door.

I openned up my key fob thinking it was the battery in the fob, but the battery was good , it ended up being the tiny lock button switch mounted to the board, at that point I just bought another key for $195.00 can

Thank you for so much info! I was concerned that once I can get in I would not be able to start the car. Will I be able to drive the car once I replace the fuse which would allow the unlock of the bottom.

Why remove the windshield, when my lock cylinder broke the locksmith had a set of small inflatable square shaped airbags. He stuffed them them in the upper rear corner of the door, pumped them up with a had pump, inserted a stiff but bendable aluminum rod inside the car and pressed the central locking button, took him all of 15 minutes! Then he removed the broken cylinder so he could turn off the double lock and turn the alarm off.
