More thanks again Ricky Bobby; I appreciate the advice and encouragement. Yep, I’ll keep going a little further. I had eyed those rebuild kits before and I bookmarked “bagpipingandy”’s website. I read some success stories here in the forums with these rebuilds. It will take me several weekends to get the free time, but I will report back on the progress.
Question though – you mentioned that even with a newly-healthy compressor, “that you 100% need dealer software to reset the module, or equivalent. Unplugging the battery will not reset the faults in the SLS module”. Being frugal, I hate to spend a huge some to simply flip a flag. (or is it more complicated than that?) Can you recommend the least expensive software tool that will get this job done? I have read many a posting on the general subject, and my cost-digging shows CDs ranging from $50 to full blown hardware computers rushing $800!! I realize I may be able to use the more complete software packages for a variety of things, but frankly I want to fix this problem and sit tight budget-wise for a while. Now is not the time I can shell out more big bucks on this. Any suggestions?

IMHO before you do anything, confirm the faults for yourself. The EHCII is a very complex system. While the dealer techs should be educated in this field, the education provided on the system from what I have heard was not very in depth.
With that said, it is worth your while to purchase the diagnostic software on your own to determine the failure point. Within the program, you are able to calibrate the system and run through certain test patterns to start checking items off of the list. Most people who have the software use a Virtual machine to run the dealer software. A popular one is from a Romanian Seller from fleabay. The software can be a challenge to install and get to work properly, but when it does, it can provide a lifeline to diagnosing a problem. I would first reverse engineer the problem, beginning with getting the software to scan for the faults. From there it can help you decide what to do. Although I agree with RB about the compressor, it doesn't hurt to find this info out for yourself.
