2006 X5 3.0 - 130k mile service

Last major tune-up was done by me around 70k miles. Car is not mine, but a family members and was recently given to another family member. The car now has 130k miles.

What are the critical parts that should be replaced around this mileage?

The car also has rough idle, but goes away when you turn the A/C on. Not sure what the cause is.

Is there anywhere online I can find how to guides (besides the one on this site) on servicing? Its been 4 years and I don't remember any of the stuff that I found when I first serviced the car.

Thanks

I'd be overhauling the front and rear suspensions and the cooling system/idlers belts pulleys and tensioners if it hasn't been done.

Spark plugs too if original as well as CCV.

I posted some DIYs in forum:

- Spark Plugs using NGK Iridium

- All fluids x4

etc.

You can search for those DIYs...

- Cooling system overhaul is next, stay tuned.

I suggest the critical parts to replace or repair are those that are related to the rough idle.

I wouldn't do anything until I checked, or had it checked, for error codes. I would have the suspension checked, a smoke test done, a compression check or better yet an inspection that is thorough like a pre purchase inspection. Since you need to find the time, and perhaps the budget, to do everything recommended in the service schedule that will help you establish an order of priority and should eliminate something else that is not on the service schedule that could be a more urgent fix than service items.

As far as service items, there are some that I don't think are critical to do, it's fine to wait for symptoms. For instance, I still have the original water pump, some of the hoses, tensioners, pulleys, have not touched the CCV system, just to mention some of those already recommended to do. I do think a periodic inspection and watching the gauges is more critical if one waits for symptoms.

I am not saying the service schedule should not be adhered to or any of recommendations are wrong. I am only saying I think there a viable option in some cases you might want to at least consider.

But if the OP finds comfort and peace of mind to do preventive maintenance as other have suggested so be it.

We just hope the vehicle throws the fault codes "in-town" versus "out of town" trip. I guess we are all slaves to this scenario (new parts, used parts or old parts)

Good luck to the OP.
