Changing Aftermarket Oil Filter

Perhaps a dumb question but I will ask. This past Thursday I had my oil/filter changed and am I now running Mobil1 0W40. I know they utilized an aftermarket oil filter during the change process and its eating at me mentally. What would be wrong with me changing the oil filter to OEM Mann Part No: HU 925/4 X myself tonight? I can get it at Advanced Auto.

Since oil Keeps the engine going round and round and the right filter is designed to keep junk from going round and round with it, I never stray from what is recommended by the mfg unless I am convinced the fluid or part is equal to or better than OE.

Nothing would be wrong with changing the filter to the correct part number if it will make you feel better. There is the possibility the aftermarket filter is the same or better than what is specified. The filter is probably fine especially if you change the oil/filter at say half the recommended interval.

Considering you won't lose much if any oil changing the filter if thats what you want to do then go for it.

So you dont consider Mobile 1 Equal or better? Not sure what is so special about BMW oil, I dont know who makes it for them.

Oil is perfect...its the filter that's not....I think you confused my question.

According to the labels under the hood, it's Castrol. Or at least it was when mine was built. Anybody know who fills the barrels at the dealership these days? I'd be surprised if they didn't just go with the best bidder with an oil that meets their specs.

All my invoices from New Country BMW indicated 5W40...you cant buy OE "BMW" 5W40 oil to my knowledge.

Use autohausaz (Phoenix, AZ) or eeuroparts (East Coast CT) and order a whole bunch of stuff:
- Oil filters x4-6
-Air Filter etc. etc.

If the order is > $75, I think shipping is free.

I don't use Mann for fear of counterfeit (which I think is resolved). I use Mahle filter, which is about $5/each at autohausaz dot com.

Don't lose sleep over this, wait until you order a whole bunch of stuff, then do it.
On the other hand, aftermarket filter is fine as long as you replace the filter every 5K-6K.

The only issue that I am aware of is the STP brand, the O-ring is under-sized and can leak over time.

Do you know what filter they put on?

Mahle and Mann are two popular aftermarket filter choices but are OEM suppliers.

You might be overthinking it but since I am reading that you are getting your lifters done your oil is going to get replaced again anyway, and with it the filter.
