Hey all - for what it's worth my driver side wheel bearing caused me a bunch of noise. We diagnosed with a stethoscope while the X was on a lift. The difference once replaced was HUGE. The ride was almost too quiet after we replaced the bearing. If you have your X up on a lift I suggest checking the wheel bearings as well as the other suspension parts.

Professor, my 01' 3.0 is having exactly the same noise. What's your final result?

We even have the exact same parts changed: half shaft and all struts. The only thing I've done more is the Pass side lower control arm & all thrust arm bushings.

Let me know!!! Thanks!

I had a problem with one CV making grinding and popping sounds when turning after I attempted the "30 minute" CV boot replacement technique. I couldn't get the snap-ring on the 1/2 shaft to snap back into the CV fully.....

Hard hit with a block of wood and a large hammer. It has to "pop" on. On mine I rotated the shaft a few degrees left and right and then it would compress and popped in.

What kinds of sounds was it making? I think my right front is on it's way out, but I'm really not sure. I doesn't constantly make noise like I've heard they can do. Did you notice a smoother ride after the replacement?

The paradigm bearing sound [when driving] is a 'roar', which increases with speed. 45 mph or higher] Mine developed gradually, and I really noticed it when driving with the windows down on curvy mountain roads, but then I noticed the sound about the time I hit 5th or 6th gear [The fix, if it is not the CV or drive shaft, is to remove the hub and replace the bearings, assuming the inside of the hub is not warn/damages so that you have to replace the hub as well. As RB and the tech who did mine will attest, removing the hub and extracting the bearings can be a PITA, even with proper tools.

Right, which is why I ask. I don't have the tell-tale roar. I did replace the right front drive axle as I had a blown CV boot and didn't want to risk just just rebooting the joint. It had been driven on for a while so dirt and such could have gotten in. I may have damaged the bearing when I put the new drive axle in, which is why I want to know what other bearing-failure symptoms there might be.
