Backup Camera and Mounting location
Hello,
I'm almost finish with my Nexus 7 2013 project. I need some help picking the backup camera and the location to mount it. Have anyone add a backup camera to their E53? If so what brand and mounting location. I'm trying to avoid drilling as posible. I'll use easycapture to feed the camera to the Nexus 7. I'm currently working on the idea of bluetooth connection with the ibus. Currently building the module and will write some code for multi media, automate the backup camera, lighting control.

I recently installed reverse camera to my X. I didn't want to drill any large holes on the car so instead I placed it on the license plate. I thought about placing it in the center of the rear roundel emblem but the placement on the license plate looked more discrete. Camera I'm using is Sony CCD rear-view that I purchased from EBAY.

To my surprise, very good. Reverse lights are more than enough to light up the rear for the camera.
Yeah, there are cameras designed for license plates but they look bulky and looked add-on. My original plan was to mount it on the car but decided on the license plate. Even though it is located in the middle of the plate, it doesn't stand out and looks somewhat hidden...

it is still fittable however... but the camera will have to be modified (you don't want to modify the car to fit a $20 camera)... i went with wireless video transmission form the camera to the TV module, but later changed from wireless to a wired connection... too much interference at my work - but was working fine at many other places... PM me your email, i will send you a write up i have on one of those ebay cameras...

When I had my camera installed, the shop placed it in the oval removable cover, on the bottom of the bumper. While very low, it works surprisingly well.

I also thought about adding PDC cover in the center of the bumper so all PDC sensors and the camera line up. I tested the location but thought it was too low. However, it did look good there and very stealthy (looks like part of the PDC system). This location is something to consider if you don't mind lower camera angle.

Hey Terminator, what's that 4-channel video recorder? I have only a front-facing one, and I would love to have one covering the rear and the speedometer area too. I am sure you have heard about .... East European cops wanting to ticket you for speeding, when you are not, haven't you?

SV1CEC -
I'd be concerned about debris, moisture in the long term on that mounting location |

The DVR is actually an 8-channel but i have only 4 active cameras connected, and the other 4 cameras are in pipeline...
The DVR is a stand alone unit, gets its power from the battery, and has ignition sense power connector too... The DVR came from china, they have included stupid "aviator" plugs that I could not source mates for, so I just cut those stupid plugs off and fitted original BMW plugs to my own harness... The DVR has 4 wires for each camera, ground, power, video and audio, so the cameras are powered directly by the DVR - the cameras that have no mikes, just don't use the audio wire... The DVR uses a hard drive, mine is 320 GB drive, and it lasts for couple months worth of recording on 4 cameras - I am sure, with all 8 cameras it will be much less... The cameras are any cameras that work on 12VDC and put out standard video signal 1-to-1 V peak to peak, basically same thing you see on the yellow wire of the RCA cables... ebay is full of those cameras, and you can sift throught the specs to get the ones that you like... I got my DVR from Alibaba for $425 delivered, but it wasn't the easiest transaction it should have been... I will look up the link for that unit and will post it... The DVR has GPS, so it records your speed and GPS locations, and when played back, can pull google maps - in my case either the player is corrupted or something is up with my computer, but while i was able to view the video, the system would hang when i try the maps... I hardwired one camera to the front, one to the back, one to look at the rear seat and one to look at the passenger and the driver... like you, i don't trust cops that misteriously "find" white powder in your car where it wasn't there before, and then you try to prove that you NEVER even seen that stuff in real life - nobody would believe you!!! in Ukraine it probably wasn't as proniounced back in the Soviet times, but in Baku it was common for the cops to find "anasha" in your pockets, and then your parents had to "privately bail" you out, if you know what i mean...
