Engine runs rough when cold

When cold my 4.4L V8 runs at a lower idle so that the whole vehicle has that low hum slight vibration and everyone 10 seconds or so the engine sort of misses. Fuel pump? Fuel filter? Spark plugs?

I know it's vague and not much information for you but if you have any thoughts that would be great?

When the X is first started in the morning, the 02 sensor doesn't control the idle because the system is not in closed loop. It uses preset parameters for the idle.

I would look into the idle control valve ICV.

My N62 does that once in a while also on cold mornings... I don't worry about it!

Thanks guys will check both of those causes. I had an issue with the engine failsafe mode coming on with a lose connection of the camshaft sensor around the same time this started happening. I fixed the connection and the failsafe mode went away. I assumed they were non related but is there a chance that they are connected in some way?

Could be but only when very cold.

I don't think it gets that cold in Sydney, Australia...?

Nah we're lucky to see it lower than 50 degrees on a winters morning where I am and it's been happening on 60-70 degree days...

It sounds a lot like the well known intermediate levers issue. Even though the symptoms, (misfires and rough idling at cold engine start), seems to happen more often at colder temperatures than you are experiencing.

It is very easy to find out if you have the intermediate lever issue. If your 4.4 N62 was 'born' between june 2004 and february 2005, then you have the issue.
All N62 engine produced in that time frame has it. -Sadly mine too.

It is a design/engineering/manufacturing fault/mistake/brain fart, take your pick, from the producent of the intermediate levers, that makes them shrink in cold weather to the point where the computer thinks something is wrong, and cuts the ignition to the affected cylinder(s).

If you want it fixed i recommend that you prepare yourself for a heart attack when you get the price.
The good news is, that if you can live with these less-than-super-smooth cold starts, then you don't have to do anything. The problem wil not get worse.

A tip from a pro intermediate-lever-experienced person:
As soon as the stumbling/rough idling begins, stop the engine and wait 20-30 seconds before starting it again. -Enjoy the now smooth idling engine and don't think about it until tomorrow morning. ;-)
