I know this is an old thread but has anyone replaced the oil pan gasket on an M54 3.0 in an X5 using the cut gasket method? I read that people have cut the gasket to prevent dropping other items to install the gasket on the same engine but not in an X so I wanted to know if anyone has done it without removing the front axle.

Hi Forwheeler,

From my understanding you have to remove the both axles. The axles run thru the oil pan so they have to be removed.

Thanks. I was aware of that when doing it the normal way but wanted to know if someone had replaced it on the X by cutting the gasket and working it around the axles. It may not be possible to lower the pan without removing the axles so it wouldn't matter. Mine is leaking and I was hoping it was an option like it is on non X machines.

Does anyone have a 2020 or recent estimate of what this repair will cost? I am thinking around $1000 at most shops in Connecticut.

I think the rate is 10 hours. If you know a shop that only charges $100/hr then that would be correct. I think most shops are a little higher though.
