WAAAAH - got sideswiped today :(

Damn damn damn!

Is this X5 of mine cursed?!
Was driving to work today and got side swiped by a little car. She ricocheted off like a bouncy ball and my tank of an X stood it's ground. I was thinking the damage was going to be ALOT worse but it's not nearly as bad as I expected to come out too

Ouch, that sucks. Glad you're okay.

My X is in the shop awaiting a new drive shaft, and yesterday the gf picked me up in the Audi, we picked up my son and were on our way home, stopped at a red light and some lady in a Chevy pickup wasn't paying attention, slammed into the back of a 1 month old MKZ behind us, which then slid into us. The driver of the MKZ was taken to the hospital. His airbags didn't deploy, car is totaled. The Audi will be getting a new rear end.

Could've been a lot worse. Accidents suck. I just want my X back.

They shouldnt go off anyway from a rear hit

I don't know how airbags work, but it was full rear, then front impact. The back seat of his MKZ no longer exists, and the front end is about 18" shorter than it was. He was knocked out because he hit his head on the steering wheel. I guess I would expect that kind of impact to trigger the airbag.

Either way, it really sucks.

With his head hitting the steering wheel I would think he was not wearing his seatbelt.

With smart airbags, an inital rear impact followed by a front impact, the airbag control software will NOT deploy the bags. Occupant position/location in the cabin is a variable after the inital rear impact, the software will non-deploy the bags on the frontal impact, seeing they could cause severe injury to non-seated/unbelted occupants.

The lesson here......WEAR SEATBELTS if you want full airbag deployment/protection.

They shouldn't go off if the car wasn't in motion and sitting at a stop light I kinda think the car wasn't in motion.

Airbag deployment has nothing to do with vehicle motion, the sensors detect direction/force of impact. You can get hit from behind by an SUV doing 60 mph and no deployment. If you hit the back of a stationary SUV at 35mph the airbags will go off.

Glad you're ok. Just had some damage on my Audi fixed from someone backing into it. It seems really hard to keep anything in good condition these days as everybody keeps running into my cars. Hopefully I can keep the X5 out of any accidents.
